Description:

Currently, we’re looking for a mid-level Technical Designer. This opportunity is for a full-time position in Chicago, IL or Cambridge, MA. Technical Designers at Disbelief combine a multitude of technical skills to solve player facing and development challenges. You should be comfortable working independently and with a team. Technical Designers are individual contributors and an important component of the development teams we offer to clients. Tasks are project dependent and varied, you may be asked to work on developer tools, gameplay features, fix UI bugs, or demystify direction for engineers.

Our Technical Designers take from a diverse range of skills and are just as comfortable working in code as creating content. We seek developers that will blur the boundaries between traditional Game Design and Engineering. You must be comfortable with moving between code, script, and content while being able to assess the outcomes of incoming changes actual and proposed.

Key Responsibilities

  • Solve technical problems from a designer’s point of view and be able to predict the efficacy of solutions
  • Report status in a way that is sharable with customers.
  • Write documentation that is externally presentable.
  • Can raise and recognize bad development practices and offer alternative solutions
  • Solve technical/feature issues in innovative ways
  • Clearly and effectively communicates with technical and non-technical disciplines
  • Champion for the player and developers, fight for quality

Skills and Requirements

  • Aware of gameplay systems, game design principles, and industry standards
  • Ability to write scripts and create scripted systems and asset pipelines
  • Able to contribute to content/dev pipelines with multiple technologies
  • Ability to discuss implementations with Engineers in a technical context
  • Excellent communication skills, both verbal and written
  • Experience working on a Console title (Xbox, PlayStation, Switch, AR/VR, etc) is a plus
  • 1-4+ years of experience in game development, Unreal Engine a plus.
  • Degree or equivalent work experience in Tech. Design/Game Design/Graphic Design/Computer Science/or another related field
  • Experience with UI/UX design and/or implementation is a plus!

Remote: Hybrid. Developers are in the office based on project needs, but can often work from home. Some of our projects require access to physical infrastructure daily.

Technologies: Most of our work is technical in nature and within a wide variety of tech stacks and game engines. Primarily we work with Unreal Engine, but we also work with custom game engines. Our work often requires researching and learning new/old technologies. Our primary platforms are PC, Xbox, Playstation, Switch, and VR/AR devices.
